The sole opposition member in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Osafile Stella, has disclosed that she has faced ridicule for her decision to leave the Labour Party for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) rather than join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking with journalists after Monday’s plenary session, Stella admitted that the political backlash has been persistent but said she has developed resilience to navigate the terrain.
“Of course, there are taunts, but in politics you must develop a thick skin. Without that, it is difficult to move forward,” she stated.
No Automatic Return Ticket
Addressing speculation about whether the ADC has guaranteed her a return ticket in the next election cycle, Stella dismissed the narrative that her move was politically transactional.
According to her, the decision was influenced by her constituents rather than party calculations.
“The ADC is well established. The structures are there. My people encouraged me to take this step. It was the constituents I represent who asked me to move to the ADC,” she explained.
She emphasized that the party is not new and possesses the institutional framework necessary to operate effectively within the state’s political structure.
On Religion and Governance
Stella also commented on the intersection of religion and politics, reaffirming Nigeria’s constitutional status as a secular state.
She argued that governance transcends religious affiliation and that political engagement should not be confined to faith-based considerations.
“Your personality will always reflect in how you play politics. After God’s authority comes government, so you cannot distance yourself from it,” she said.
Relationship With Assembly Leadership
The lawmaker, who currently chairs the House Committee on Wealth Creation and Employment, rejected suggestions that her opposition role has resulted in marginalization within the Assembly.
She commended Speaker Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa for maintaining professionalism despite party differences.
“When I campaigned, I emphasised capacity, competence and character. I believe the Speaker understands his role and assigns responsibilities appropriately. I have not experienced any form of discrimination,” she noted.
“Beyond party politics, he is committed to governance. He has given me the space to function and has consistently set aside party differences to uphold the Constitution,” Stella added.
Her remarks underscore the complexities of opposition politics within Lagos State’s predominantly APC-controlled Assembly, while signaling her commitment to advancing her constituents’ interests under her new political platform.
