UK to End Physical Visa Stickers for Nigerians, Introduces Mandatory eVisa From February 25, 2026

The United Kingdom has announced that from February 25, 2026, it will stop issuing physical visa stickers to Nigerian travellers and replace them with a fully digital eVisa system.

The decision was unveiled in Abuja by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), which confirmed that all new Visit visas granted to Nigerians will now be issued electronically as part of the country’s transition to a digital border framework.

What Is Changing?

Under the new arrangement, approved applicants will no longer receive visa vignettes affixed to their passports. Instead, their immigration status will be stored online and linked to a secure UKVI account.

Authorities clarified that the visa application process itself remains unchanged. Nigerian applicants will still:

  • Complete the online application form
  • Pay the required visa fees
  • Attend a Visa Application Centre for biometric capture
  • Meet all eligibility and documentation requirements

The only modification concerns how the visa is issued and accessed after approval.

Validity of Existing Physical Visas

UK authorities assured travellers who currently hold valid physical visa stickers that their visas will remain valid until their stated expiry dates. There is no requirement to replace or convert them because of the digital transition.

UK Government’s Position

The British Deputy High Commissioner in Abuja, Gill Lever, said the reform is aimed at simplifying travel procedures while strengthening border security.

According to her, the digital shift will reduce reliance on paper-based documentation and improve efficiency in the verification process.

Expected Benefits of the eVisa System

UKVI outlined several projected advantages:

  1. Faster processing timelines – Passports will no longer be retained for visa endorsement once a decision is made.
  2. Enhanced security – Digital visas cannot be physically stolen, misplaced, or tampered with.
  3. Real-time verification – Immigration status can be checked electronically by relevant authorities.
  4. Online access – Travellers can view and manage their visa information through a secure UKVI account.

Once approved, applicants must create a free UKVI online account to access and, where necessary, share their eVisa details.

Part of a Broader Border Modernization Plan

The reform forms part of the UK’s broader immigration modernization strategy, which is progressively moving toward a fully digital border system. Nigerian travellers are among the first groups to adopt the digital-only visa issuance model.

For business visitors, students, and frequent travellers, the development represents a structural shift from passport-based visa endorsements to a secure online immigration record as the primary proof of UK entry clearance.

With the rollout scheduled for February 25, 2026, prospective Nigerian travellers are advised to familiarize themselves with the UKVI digital account system ahead of future applications.
