Governor Caleb Mutfwang has confirmed that 28 people were killed in a gunmen attack in Angwan Rukuba, located in Jos North Local Government Area.
The governor disclosed this in a statewide broadcast on Tuesday, days after the incident which occurred on Sunday evening around 7:30 p.m., when residents were reportedly going about their normal activities before the attackers struck.
“Twenty-eight lives were lost and many others were injured,” Mutfwang stated.
He revealed that he visited the affected community alongside security chiefs and also met with victims receiving treatment at the Jos University Teaching Hospital, noting that most of the injured are currently stable.
According to the governor, the Plateau State Government will take full responsibility for the medical expenses of the injured and provide support to families of those who lost their lives, including burial arrangements.
In response to the attack, Mutfwang announced a 48-hour curfew in Jos North Local Government Area, effective from midnight on March 29 to April 1, to enable security agencies to carry out intensive operations.
He also confirmed that a suspect who had previously issued threats has been arrested, adding that security operatives have been directed to apprehend other individuals connected to the attack.
“We are committed to ensuring that all those involved are brought to justice,” he said.
The governor urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, encouraging them to report any suspicious movements or activities to security agencies.
As part of additional security measures, he ordered strict enforcement of the ban on commercial motorcycles within the Jos area and disclosed that a State Security Council meeting had been convened to reassess and strengthen existing strategies.
Mutfwang emphasized that his administration will continue working closely with security agencies to restore order and prevent further attacks in the state.
