FIFA Confirms DR Congo for Inter-Confederation Play-Off, Ending Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup Hopes

Africa will have 9 spots in the 2026 FIFA World Cup

FIFA has confirmed the final lineup for the inter-confederation play-off tournament for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, naming DR Congo as Africa’s representative.

The decision effectively ends the qualification hopes of Nigeria national football team, whose federation had been challenging the outcome of their defeat in the Confederation of African Football play-offs.

According to an accreditation notice circulated to journalists ahead of the tournament, FIFA confirmed the six nations set to participate in the competition, with DR Congo occupying Africa’s slot.

Nigeria’s Protest

The Nigeria Football Federation had earlier filed a formal protest after the November 2025 CAF play-off clash between Nigeria and DR Congo ended 1–1 before proceeding to penalties, where Nigeria lost.

Nigeria’s appeal alleged that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the decisive match and requested that the result be overturned.

If the appeal had succeeded, it would have secured Nigeria’s place in the inter-confederation play-off tournament — the final pathway to qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

FIFA Decision

With FIFA now confirming DR Congo’s participation in the play-offs, Nigeria’s bid to challenge the outcome has effectively been dismissed, closing the door on the Super Eagles’ hopes of reaching the 2026 tournament through the final qualification route.

The inter-confederation play-off tournament will feature six teams from different confederations competing for the last available places at the expanded 2026 World Cup.
