Sunday Igboho Sparks Reactions After Wearing APC Cap at Ibadan Event

Sunday Igboho Denies Insulting Alaafin of Oyo, Clarifies Viral Comment

Yoruba nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has stirred debate online after being seen wearing a cap bearing the All Progressives Congress logo at a social event in Ibadan.

Igboho attended the first Ramadan lecture hosted by the Rasheed Ladoja following the monarch’s coronation.

In a video circulating on social media, the activist was seen greeting the Olubadan and the event’s guest lecturer, Muyideen Salmon, while wearing the APC-branded fez cap.

Online Reactions and Comparisons With Nnamdi Kanu

The video quickly triggered reactions on social media, with several users comparing Igboho’s actions to those of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

Some critics questioned whether a figure advocating Yoruba self-determination should be publicly associated with the ruling party.

Others suggested the move reflected political realities surrounding Igboho’s possible return to Nigeria after years in exile.

Context: Plans for Igboho’s Return

Igboho’s spokesperson, Olayomi Koiki, recently said arrangements had been concluded for the activist to return to Nigeria after intervention by prominent traditional rulers.

Those who reportedly appealed to Bola Tinubu include:

  • The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasheed Ladoja
  • The Adeyeye Ogunwusi
  • The Francis Alao

Koiki said the Presidency had cleared Igboho’s name from the list of wanted persons, allowing him to return to the country “at any moment.”

Background to Igboho’s Exile

Igboho fled Nigeria on July 1, 2021, after a raid on his Ibadan residence by operatives of the Department of State Services and the Nigerian Army.

Authorities accused him of stockpiling arms and ammunition during his campaign against alleged attacks by armed herdsmen in South-West communities.

During the operation:

  • Three of his aides were killed
  • Thirteen others were arrested

Igboho later fled to the Republic of Benin, where he was arrested at Cotonou Airport on July 19, 2021, while attempting to travel to Germany.

He spent over a year in detention before being released in March 2022.

Under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, Igboho was declared wanted, denied a Nigerian passport, and had his bank accounts frozen despite favourable court rulings.

Appeal to Tinubu Government

In 2025, during a visit to the Olugbon Palace in Oyo State, Igboho publicly appealed to President Tinubu’s government to remove his name from the wanted list, saying life in exile had been difficult.

With reports now indicating he may soon return to Nigeria, the recent appearance in an APC-branded cap has added a new political dimension to discussions about his future role in the country.
