“Educate Yourself Bozo — BNXN Fires Back at Fat Joe Over ‘Buju’ Name Claim”

Afrobeats star BNXN has fired back sharply at American rapper Fat Joe after comments linking him to the singer’s decision to drop his former stage name, Buju, sparked backlash online.

The exchange began after Fat Joe, during a podcast conversation involving reggae legend Buju Banton, suggested pressure from him and others played a role in the Nigerian singer abandoning the name, claiming there had been confusion and even disrespect surrounding its use

But BNXN was quick to reject that narrative.

In a blistering reaction shared on X, the singer accused Fat Joe of spreading falsehoods about African music and showing ignorance toward the culture.

“The hate in your heart and your misinformation about African music and its artists is why your chromosomes are all fucked up. Educate yourself bozo,” BNXN wrote, directly tagging the American rapper.

The response immediately stirred reactions online, with many fans backing the Nigerian star and pushing back against Fat Joe’s comments.

For BNXN supporters, the issue goes beyond a name dispute, touching on recurring frustrations about how African artists and their creative identities are sometimes framed or misunderstood by figures outside the continent.

BNXN, formerly known as Buju, adopted his current name in 2022, explaining at the time that the rebrand was part of his artistic evolution. The singer has previously made it clear that the change was personal and strategic, not the result of outside pressure.

That is why Fat Joe’s suggestion appeared to strike a nerve.

Many fans also pointed out that the singer had long addressed any confusion tied to the old name and moved forward years ago, making the claim that industry pressure forced the switch seem misleading.

The clash has now added another layer to wider conversations about recognition, respect and ownership within global music culture, especially as Afrobeats continues to command increasing international influence.

While Fat Joe has yet to respond to BNXN’s remarks, the singer’s blunt reaction has already turned the moment into a trending talking point, with many praising him for defending both his name and African music.

For BNXN, the message was simple and unmistakable: his story will not be told for him.
