Nigerian filmmaker Biodun Stephen is opening up about a deeply personal transformation, revealing how a mix of health concerns and lifestyle changes led her to lose 22 kilograms in just over a year.

Sharing her journey on Instagram, the director offered a candid look at the physical and emotional realities behind the numbers, tracing her turning point back to years of gradual weight gain that she initially overlooked.

“I stepped into the 3 digit weight category in 2010. I paid no mind until small small health challenges began to creep in,” she wrote, explaining how what once felt manageable eventually became a concern she could no longer ignore.

By January 2025, she made a decisive shift.

Rather than chasing quick fixes, Stephen focused on understanding the root cause of her weight gain, which she identified as stress-driven. That realization shaped her approach, pushing her toward a structured lifestyle reset centered on sleep, dietary awareness, and consistency.

Her early results, however, tested her patience.

After three months of effort, she had lost just 4 kilograms by April 2025, a pace that left her discouraged. But instead of giving up, she sought professional guidance, a decision that significantly accelerated her progress. Within another three months, she shed an additional 10 kilograms, giving her the momentum she needed to stay committed.

By September, she had lost a total of 14 kilograms, but was still 12 kilograms short of her personal target. At that point, the journey became less about rapid results and more about discipline.

She intensified her routine, incorporating consistent walking, maintaining a 14 to 16-hour16-hour window for her body to process food, prioritizing at least 6 hours of sleep, and sticking to her supplement plan. These adjustments, though simple on the surface, became the foundation of her progress.

Sixteen months after starting, she stepped on the scale and saw a number that marked a major milestone.

“I saw 98kg. 22kg lost. This is a win for me,” she shared.

For Stephen, the achievement goes beyond weight loss. It represents a shift in mindset and a commitment to long-term health. She made it clear that maintaining her current progress is now the real goal, describing her intention to remain in what she called her “two digits era” for the rest of the year.

Her story resonates because it reflects a realistic path often overlooked in transformation narratives. There was no overnight success, no dramatic shortcuts, just gradual progress, setbacks, and adjustments along the way.

Beyond her personal journey, Stephen remains a prominent figure in Nollywood, known for directing and producing films such as Ovy’s Voice, Picture Perfect, Sobi’s Mystic, We Don’t Live Here Anymore, Sista, Introducing the Kujus, Breaded Life, A Simple Lie, and Hey You. Her ability to tell relatable, human-centred stories on screen now mirrors the honesty she has brought to sharing her own experience.

The broader significance of her journey lies in its relatability. Many people navigating weight and health challenges face similar struggles with consistency, motivation, and understanding their bodies. By documenting both the slow phases and the breakthroughs, she offers a perspective grounded in patience and sustainability.

As she continues on this path, her focus is no longer just on reaching a number, but on maintaining a lifestyle that supports her overall well-being, a reminder that the real transformation often happens beyond the scale.
