“They Tried To Box Me Into Side Chick Roles Because I’m Dark And Curvy — Bolaji Ogunmola Opens Up On her Nollywood Journey

Bolaji Ogunmola has opened up about one of the most frustrating parts of her early Nollywood journey, revealing how she was repeatedly boxed into certain movie roles because of her appearance.

The actress spoke candidly during a recent interview with media personality JayOnAir, where she reflected on the difficult realities she faced while trying to build a career in an industry that, she says, often judges actresses based on skin tone and body shape.

According to Bolaji, there was a period in Nollywood when fair-skinned actresses dominated major roles, while darker-skinned actresses were frequently stereotyped or pushed into limited character types.

“It was almost like they wanted to put me in a box,” she said.

“I am dark skinned. There was a time when light skinned people were reigning, and they told me I was very curvy and tried to limit me to side chick roles.”

The actress admitted that the experience became emotionally frustrating because she wanted to be seen as more than a stereotype.

“That went on for a while, and I didn’t like it,” she added.

Bolaji’s comments have sparked fresh conversations online about beauty standards and typecasting in Nollywood, especially regarding how actresses are sometimes judged based on physical appearance rather than talent or range.

Despite the setbacks, the actress said she refused to give up and remained consistent through the ups and downs of her journey.

“My journey has been crazy, but I have just kept at it,” she said.

Before becoming a recognized face in Nollywood, Bolaji also participated in the reality show Next Movie Star, though she did not make it to the final house.

Beyond acting, Bolaji revealed she intentionally started building side businesses early in her career because she never saw herself working a traditional office job.

“I never wanted to do 9–5,” she explained.

“It’s not just me. Shoutout to people who do it, I applaud you. But for me, I am business savvy like that.”

The actress stressed that entertainers should never depend entirely on fame, as popularity can change quickly in the industry.

“Life is in phases. You are popular today, you may not be tomorrow,” she said.

“What are you doing to put food on the table? You should be investing, positioning yourself from now.”

She also spoke about the importance of humility and learning from others as she grows in the film industry.

According to her, filmmaker Biodun Stephen played a major role in shaping her understanding of movie production.

“Before you lead, serve,” Bolaji said.

“Biodun Stephen was my first teacher when it comes to movie production. Every time I am on set, I am watching her.”

Over the years, Bolaji Ogunmola has steadily built her reputation as both an actress and filmmaker, becoming known for her performances, business mindset, and consistency in Nollywood despite the challenges she faced early in her career.
