Desmond Elliot Seeks Fourth Term in Surulere, Sparks Mixed Reactions

Nollywood actor-turned-politician Desmond Elliot is making another move in Lagos politics, officially declaring his intention to return to the State House of Assembly for a fourth term. This decision has already stirred strong reactions online.

Desmond Elliot confirmed that he has obtained his nomination form to contest again for Surulere Constituency I, positioning his bid as a continuation of ongoing work rather than a fresh start.

In a detailed statement shared on Instagram, he emphasized his commitment to building on existing progress and advancing his constituents’ interests.

According to him, returning to the Assembly would elevate his standing within the legislative structure, making him a ranking member. He argued that this status would confer greater influence and priority, translating into more tangible benefits for Surulere.

His message also struck a tone of appreciation, acknowledging party leaders, stakeholders, and supporters who have backed him over the years. He urged his base to remain united, peaceful, and focused as the political process unfolds.

But while Elliot framed the announcement as a step forward for his constituency, public reactions have been far from unanimous.

On social media, some users questioned the idea of a fourth term, suggesting that political space should allow for new voices and leadership. Others expressed skepticism about his track record, revisiting past criticisms about his performance in office.

At the same time, his supporters point to his previous electoral success as proof of continued relevance. In 2023, Elliot secured victory in the Surulere Constituency race with over 17,000 votes, reinforcing his grip on the seat.

His time in office has not been without controversy. From public criticism over campaign materials to debates about constituency projects, Elliot has often found himself at the center of political conversations that extend beyond his immediate district.

Despite that, he has consistently defended his efforts, highlighting initiatives such as infrastructure support and community interventions to improve local living conditions.

The decision to run again reflects a broader pattern in Nigerian politics, where incumbency and experience are often leveraged as key advantages.

Elliot’s argument about becoming a ranking member fits into that logic, suggesting that longevity in office can enhance a constituency’s access to resources and influence.

Still, the challenge ahead is clear. Beyond securing party backing, he will need to convince voters that continuity is preferable to change.

As the race begins to take shape, Surulere becomes a focal point once again, not just for electoral competition but for the ongoing debate about performance, representation, and political renewal.

For Desmond Elliot, the message is simple. He believes there is more to do. Whether voters agree will ultimately be decided at the ballot box.
