Industry Mourns DJ and Fashion Creative Maria McCloy After Sudden Passing

The South African entertainment and fashion industry is in mourning following the heartbreaking passing of beloved DJ, publicist, and fashion designer Maria McCloy, who has died at the age of 50.

According to a statement released by her family, Maria passed away on Tuesday evening at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg after suffering heart failure.

The news has sent shockwaves across Mzansi, with celebrities, friends, and supporters flooding social media with tributes honoring her contribution to music, fashion, and culture.

In an emotional statement, her family remembered Maria as a vibrant soul whose impact stretched far beyond the entertainment space.

“It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we confirm the passing of our beloved sister and media industry giant, Maria McCloy.

Maria sadly passed away on Tuesday evening, 12 May 2026, at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg, following heart failure.

Maria — a vibrant and creative soul who embraced life wholeheartedly as a DJ, publicist, and fashion designer — was loved by her family, friends, colleagues, and community at large.”

The statement continued by highlighting her warmth, generosity, and ability to bring people together.

“Her kindness, warmth, generosity and unwavering love for those around her touched many lives and will never be forgotten. She had a special way of bringing people together and her presence brought comfort, laughter and love to all who knew her.”

Maria is survived by her mother and her sisters, Thandiwe and Natasha, along with close family members and friends who are now grieving the painful loss.

The family also asked for privacy during this difficult period and confirmed that memorial and funeral details will be shared in due course.

Following the announcement, tributes from across the entertainment industry poured in almost immediately.

Media personality Minnie Dlamini expressed her sadness, writing, “What a loss. Rest easy Queen and thank you for the culture.”

Rapper and media personality Boity Thulo also reacted emotionally to the news.

“Oh my goodness, this is gut wrenching!! My deepest condolences to the family. What???!”

Author and model Refilwe Modiselle reflected on how sudden and painful the loss feels.
