Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has shared a message encouraging women to prioritize self-care and personal well-being.
In a post on her Instagram page, the actress reflected on the importance of intentionally caring for one’s mental, physical, and spiritual health, stressing that self-care should never be seen as selfishness.
According to Funke, she has gradually learned over time that women often spend so much energy caring for others that they sometimes neglect themselves in the process.
“Over time, I’ve learned that taking care of yourself is not selfish; it’s necessary,” she wrote.
The actress explained that self-care for her goes beyond luxury treatments and includes simple but important habits such as resting, praying, sleeping, spending quiet time, and protecting one’s peace of mind.
“From resting, praying, and spending time at the spa or salon to taking care of my mental, physical, and spiritual health, I’ve learned to prioritise myself too,” she added.
Funke also encouraged women not to feel guilty about investing time in themselves, noting that constantly giving without replenishing their emotional reserves can become draining.
“As women, we pour so much into others, but you can’t pour from an empty cup. Fill yourself up too. Love yourself. Be kind to yourself,” she said.
The award-winning filmmaker reminded followers once again that self-care does not always require expensive activities.
According to her, even basic acts like taking a walk, sleeping properly, praying, or simply protecting one’s peace can make a meaningful difference.
“Self-care doesn’t always have to be expensive. Sometimes it’s simply resting, sleeping, praying, taking a walk, or giving yourself peace of mind,” she added.
She ended the post by asking followers what they planned to do for themselves during the weekend.
Funke Akindele’s message quickly resonated with many fans online, especially women who praised the actress for speaking openly about emotional wellness and balance.
The actress has remained one of Nollywood’s most influential figures both onscreen and on social media, often sharing motivational reflections alongside updates about her films and career.
Her latest message comes amid increasing conversations globally around mental health, burnout, emotional well-being, and the pressures women face balancing work, family, and personal responsibilities.
For many supporters, the post served as both encouragement and a reminder that prioritizing personal well-being is not a weakness but is necessary for long-term health and stability.
