YouTube Rolls Out Major Shorts Update With 2x Speed Playback, New Reactions and Clear Screen Mode

YouTube Short, TikTok's competitor, has over 1.5 billion users

YouTube is giving Shorts a fresh makeover with a series of new features designed to make watching short-form videos faster, cleaner and more interactive.

The Google-owned platform has announced several updates for Shorts, including a new playback speed option, redesigned reactions and a distraction-free viewing mode. The changes are part of YouTube’s ongoing effort to improve the user experience as competition in the short-form video space intensifies.

One of the biggest additions is the ability to watch Shorts at 2x speed. The new option allows viewers to speed through videos, revisit specific moments more quickly or consume more content in less time.

According to YouTube, the feature is intended to help users “absorb information more quickly or find your favorite part faster.”

YouTube removes the Shorts dislike button

Another noticeable change is the removal of the dislike button on Shorts.

Instead of tapping a thumbs-down icon, users who want to see less of certain content will now have to use the “Not Interested” or “Don’t recommend this channel” options. These tools will continue to help YouTube understand the types of content users want to avoid, without displaying a public dislike button.

The decision is expected to spark discussion among users, especially those who previously relied on dislikes to provide quick feedback on videos.

Heart reactions replace the traditional like button

YouTube is also changing how viewers react to Shorts by replacing the familiar thumbs-up icon with a heart emoji.

The company believes the new reaction better reflects appreciation for creators and aligns with the more expressive ways people interact with content across social media platforms.

New Clear Screen mode offers distraction-free viewing

For users who prefer a cleaner viewing experience, YouTube is introducing Clear Screen mode.

The feature temporarily removes all on-screen icons, captions and interface elements while a Short is playing, allowing viewers to focus entirely on the video without distractions.

Whether you’re watching cooking tutorials, comedy clips, sports highlights or travel content, the new mode provides a more immersive viewing experience.

Why YouTube is making these changes

The latest update reflects YouTube’s determination to strengthen Shorts as it competes with rivals like TikTok and Instagram Reels.

Although YouTube entered the short-form video market later than its competitors, Shorts has grown rapidly over the past few years.

The platform revealed that Shorts now averages more than 200 billion daily views, highlighting its growing popularity among users worldwide. While YouTube counts a view from the moment a video begins playing, the figure still underscores the platform’s enormous scale.

Viewing habits are also changing beyond smartphones. Recent reports show that Shorts is increasingly being watched on television screens, with viewers consuming around 2 billion hours of short-form content on TVs every month.

When will the new features be available?

YouTube says the new Shorts features will begin rolling out gradually to users over time. While the company has not announced an exact release schedule, the updates are expected to reach more users in the coming weeks.

As competition for attention in the short-form video market continues to grow, the latest changes signal YouTube’s commitment to refining Shorts and keeping creators and viewers engaged with a faster, more personalized and distraction-free experience.
