Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu has advised Stanley Nwabali to make the most of the current transfer window by leaving South African side Chippa United, insisting that regular first-team football is crucial if he hopes to reclaim his place as Nigeria’s number one goalkeeper.
Shorunmu’s advice comes amid growing uncertainty over Nwabali’s future at his club, with the shot-stopper linked with moves away from the South African Premier Division following his impressive performances for the Super Eagles.
Speaking about the goalkeeper’s future, Shorunmu stressed that consistent game time is essential for any player hoping to remain competitive at the international level.
According to the former Nigerian international, Nwabali cannot afford to spend valuable time on the bench if he wants to remain in contention for the Super Eagles’ first-choice shirt.
He urged the goalkeeper to use the ongoing transfer window to secure a move to a club where he can play regularly.
Nwabali established himself as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper following his outstanding displays at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where he played a key role in helping the Super Eagles reach the final.
However, competition for the position has intensified, with several Nigerian goalkeepers vying for opportunities in the national team.
Shorunmu believes maintaining regular club football will be vital if Nwabali is to stay ahead of his rivals and remain a key figure for the Super Eagles.
The goalkeeper has attracted interest since his AFCON heroics, with reports linking him to clubs in Europe and other leagues outside South Africa.
While no transfer has been officially confirmed, Shorunmu believes now is the right time for Nwabali to take the next step in his career.
The former Super Eagles goalkeeper maintained that playing consistently at club level will not only improve Nwabali’s development but also strengthen his chances of retaining his place between the sticks for Nigeria in future international competitions.
With the transfer window still open, attention will now turn to whether Nwabali secures a move that could shape the next phase of his club and international career.
