“People Forgot He Was Grieving” — Why Stanley Nwabali Walked Away From Football Before Chippa United Return

Stanley Nwabali

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has finally been given a voice behind one of the biggest unanswered questions in Nigerian football this year, with new details revealing that his decision to step away from the game was driven by unimaginable personal loss rather than football.

After months of speculation surrounding his departure from Chippa United, ESPN has reported that the Nigerian international temporarily walked away from football to focus on his mental health following the deaths of his grandmother, father and mother within a remarkably short period.

The emotional burden, according to those closest to him, became too heavy to ignore.

Nwabali has now returned to South African club Chippa United, five months after leaving by mutual consent in February, bringing an end to a difficult chapter that many fans never fully understood.

A Decision Beyond Football

When Nwabali first left Chippa United, he chose not to reveal the full reason behind his exit.

Speaking at the time to South Africa’s Metro FM, the goalkeeper only hinted that he needed to prioritise his well-being.

“It is best you are being comfortable and enjoying the moment,” he said.

“It was a strong decision, not a really nice decision, and I felt it was best for me.

“Football is something that deals with happiness, your happiness comes first. I am happy with the club, but it is something that both parties understand.”

While his comments left room for speculation, fresh details shared with ESPN paint a much clearer picture of what the 29-year-old was silently battling.

Three Family Losses in a Short Space of Time

According to his representative, Mohammed Lawal, Nwabali’s departure from Chippa United was never about seeking another club.

Instead, it was a complete break from football so he could process the grief of losing three of the closest people in his life.

The tragedies began with the death of his grandmother shortly before Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Benin Republic.

Hours after featuring in Nigeria’s 1-1 draw in that match, Nwabali received another devastating blow with the passing of his father, Chief Godspower Nwabali.

The heartbreak continued when his mother, Grace Nwabali, died on January 1, 2025, leaving the goalkeeper to cope with the loss of both parents within a short period.

Lawal said the emotional impact was overwhelming.

“It has been very difficult for Stanley.

“People don’t always know what is going on with these players. They only see them on the field. They know them as footballers, but they don’t know that they are human beings too. Like everyone else, they go through life’s challenges.”

The Emotional Struggles Fans Didn’t See

Lawal explained that after losing his parents, Nwabali suddenly found himself carrying enormous family responsibilities while still trying to perform at the highest level for both club and country.

“After losing his parents, he became responsible for everything. There was a lot he needed to take care of.

“As a professional, he knew he had to keep playing, but it was affecting him and if he continued, he was going to destroy himself because when you’re not in the right mental state, it shows.”

According to him, the goalkeeper’s emotional state became noticeable during Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying matches and AFCON campaign.

Supporters who watched him saw a player who appeared more confrontational than usual. However, few understood what he was carrying away from the pitch.

“You could see it during some of his games for the national team. People probably thought he was fighting with his teammates.”

Lawal added that Nwabali’s personality had changed dramatically during that period.

“If you look back, you’ll see the difference. Stanley used to be lively and always smiling.

“During the last AFCON and the World Cup qualifiers, he became unusually aggressive. He was shouting at teammates and confronting opponents. But that wasn’t the real Stanley.

“When he first started playing for Nigeria, everyone talked about how calm he was under pressure. Later, people thought he had become overconfident or aggressive. They didn’t know what was happening inside him.”

Take Time Away Before You Damage Your Career

Recognising how much the grief was affecting both his life and performances, those around the goalkeeper encouraged him to temporarily step away from football before the situation became even worse.

Lawal recalled telling him:

“We told him, ‘This isn’t you. Take time away before you do permanent damage to your career.'”

He also explained why neither Nwabali nor Chippa United publicly disclosed that mental health was the reason behind his departure.

“You ask why he and the club didn’t publicly say he was taking time off for his mental health. But it wasn’t something they planned together.

“Stanley simply realized he needed to step away and he asked to be released.”

A Fresh Start at Chippa United

With time away from football allowing him to focus on healing and his family responsibilities, Nwabali has now rejoined Chippa United ahead of the new season.

His return offers the Super Eagles goalkeeper a chance to rebuild after one of the most painful periods of his life.

The revelations surrounding his absence have also reignited conversations about mental health in professional sports, highlighting that while fans often judge players based on performances, the personal battles they face away from the spotlight can be just as demanding as anything that happens on the pitch.
