Former Big Brother Naija winner Mercy Eke has made it clear that cooking every day is not a role she is willing to take on in a relationship, saying she would rather be honest about her expectations than pretend to fit a traditional mould.
Speaking during an interview with Toke Makinwa, the reality TV star said she enjoys cooking only occasionally and does not believe love or marriage should come with the expectation of preparing fresh meals for a partner every day.
“I can’t marry or date a man who wants me to cook for him regularly. I only cook once in a while when I am in the mood. If you want fresh food every day, hire a chef.
“It can’t be me. Love can never make me cook for a man every day. I’m not the woman for that kind of man. There are other women out there who will gladly do that, which is fine. So, if you marry me and you are thinking you don’t eat overnight food, it’s not me. I can’t cook every day.”
Mercy stressed that her comments are not a criticism of women who enjoy cooking for their partners, but simply a reflection of the kind of relationship that suits her lifestyle.
Her remarks have sparked conversations on social media, with some applauding her honesty and others arguing that cooking is an important part of building a home.
Many, however, agreed that expectations around household responsibilities should be discussed openly before marriage.
