Rafael Benitez, who previously managed Liverpool and Chelsea, has been relieved of his duties as manager of Celta Vigo in Spain.
Benitez was hired last summer with high expectations, but his stint has been hampered by disappointing results, with Celta only two points above the relegation zone.
Benitez’s dismissal after a string of dismal performances, the most recent of which was a 4-0 loss to Real Madrid.
Despite a midtable budget, Celta has only won five league games this season, leaving them in a difficult position in the league.
Benitez’s departure was somewhat expected, with reports of disagreements between the manager and players over the team’s style of play.
Football Espana also reports that fans at Balaidos have also been vocal in their displeasure, calling for Benitez’s exit for months.
The club are reportedly looking at B team manager Claudio Giraldez as a potential replacement, given the financial constraints of sacking Benitez, which would cost them around €9 million.
