The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has issued instructions for its members to conduct picketing activities at the offices of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, scheduled for Monday.
The decision to give this directive was made subsequent to a gathering of the Central Working Committee, CWC, on the 30th of April, 2024.
In an official statement endorsed by Chris Uyot, Acting Secretary-General of NLC, it was communicated that the nationwide picketing is planned for Monday, the 13th of May, 2024.
He said: “The nationwide picketing is slated for Monday, 13 May, 2024.”
Having sent a letter of protest to the NERC headquarters, the organized labor specified a deadline of the 12th of May, 2024, for NERC to reverse the recent electricity tariff increase under threat of widespread demonstrations.
The unions justified their demand for a reversal by highlighting the severe impact NERC’s actions would have on the general populace.
They expressed that the announced tariff increment not only disregards the legally prescribed procedure but also infringes upon the rights of Nigerian residents.
