Don’t interfer in tenure of our union leaders – NLC warns FG

Nlc

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has urged the Federal Government to refrain from interfering in the tenure of union leaders in the country.

The call was made by NLC Head of Information, Mr Benson Upah, during a press conference in Abuja.

Upah stated that the government’s alleged attempt to impose a two-year tenure on labour leaders would constitute interference in trade unions’ internal affairs and a violation of Labour Law and International Labour Organisation, ILO, Conventions.

“The federal government should put an end to the ongoing alleged hybrid war against Congress.

“However, if the government feels that two years is the best tenure to go, it should be two years for everyone including office of the President and principal public officers as well,” he said.

He also requested the government to cease interference in the Labour Party and halt the destabilization campaign against opposition parties. Upah demanded an apology from the police for the invasion of NLC’s headquarters, warning of potential industrial action if no apology is issued.

He criticized the police’s explanations for the invasion as inadequate and incomplete.
