Why I prefer Ghanaian jollof rice to our own – Ayra Starr

Ayra Starr on her relationship with Rema

Afrobeats singer Ayra Starr, born Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, has given her opinion on the age-old debate between Nigerian and Ghanaian jollof rice.

During a recent 21 questions session with BET Amplified, the ‘Bad Vibes’ singer revealed her preference for Ghanaian jollof rice, citing the garnishing as the main factor influencing her choice.

The talented 21-year-old artist went on to explain the differences between Nigerian and Ghanaian jollof rice traditions, adding fuel to the fire of the ongoing jollof rice rivalry between fans of the two countries.

When asked which country’s jollof rice she enjoys more, Ayra Starr said:

“Ghanaian jollof”.

“I mean they are both really amazing. I grew up with Nigerian jollof rice. Nigerian jollof is practically called party rice, so people eat it at parties. It is like a celebratory food.”

“The culture around it is that they usually use a big pot to cook it outside, so it kind of burns and it is smoky. So it is smoky jollof rice, that is what it is called. Ghanaian jollof rice has like things inside but for Nigerian jollof, the protein, vegetables are outside if you are having anything else. So it is two different vibes.”

Ayra Starr shot to fame in 2021 with the release of her hit track ‘Bloody Samaritan’ and has since released her debut studio album ’19 and Dangerous’, which features other popular songs like “Away” and “Rush”.

She later collaborated with American singer Kelly Rowland on a remix of ‘Bloody Samaritan’, solidifying her status as a rising star in the music industry.
