How I lost my voice right before recording for Beyonce – Yemi Alade

Yemi Alade lends her voice to the ongoing protest

Nigerian musical sensation Yemi Alade has revealed the tale of how her voice vanished after receiving an invitation to grace the album of American hip hop icon Beyonce Knowles Carter.

The talented artist recounted her journey to Los Angeles, United States, where she stepped into the studio to mingle with the creative team, just a day prior to her recording adventure.

The 2025 Grammy award nominee then retreated to her room after the studio session, drifting off to sleep, only to awaken the following day to discover that her voice had abandoned her.

During a candid chat with Larry Madowo on CNN African Voices, Yemi Alade expressed that while her mind was filled with effort, her lips remained sealed, leaving her to communicate through the written word on paper.

The Mama Africa sensation contemplated surrendering to despair, yet she decided to embark on her vocal routine first — a delightful concoction of warm water, Vitamin C, ginger, and herbal teas, while keeping cozy. Fortunately, her efforts bore fruit, and she regained enough voice to record two enchanting songs with Beyonce for her album.

However, the 35 year old light-heartedly said her ‘village people’ didn’t want her on that album but she is grateful to God that they did not succeed.

Yemi Alade was featured on “Don’t Jealous Me“, a track from Beyoncé’s soundtrack album The Lion King: The Gift. She appeared on the track alongside Mr Eazi and Tekno. Rolling Stone magazine revealed that Alade also recorded a verse for an earlier version of “My Power” in June.
