R Kelly receives massive streaming income despite being locked up

Just In: R. Kelly sentenced to 20 years for child sex crimes

R Kelly is regarded as one of the most disgraced individuals in contemporary music.

In 2019, the R&B icon was convicted of federal racketeering and sex trafficking, which included the sexual abuse of minors. He has been incarcerated since that time. Although he has been unable to produce new music while imprisoned, his financial status indicates that he remains financially secure.

On November 29, R Kelly settled a substantial federal judgment. This obligation would have been insurmountable had it not been for his continued ability to generate significant income from his previous musical works.

AllHipHop has verified that R. Kelly remitted a federal judgment of $520,549.90, which was associated with his criminal convictions. The judgment was officially disclosed on December 7, 2022, and was itemized into various components.

R Kelly was mandated to pay $379,649.90 in restitution, alongside a $100,000 fine, a $40,000 assessment under the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act, and a special assessment of $900. This totaled just over $520,000, which Kelly successfully fulfilled in one substantial transaction. While it may appear unusual that the Pied Piper of R&B continues to generate substantial revenue, this is indeed the case.

In 2019, Lifetime premiered the three-part docuseries “Surviving R Kelly.” The series meticulously chronicled the allegations against the artist in alarming detail. It also included firsthand testimonies from Kelly’s purported victims. Such an exposé typically results in career-ending consequences, and it did, to a certain degree. Since the airing of the docuseries, R. Kelly has not released any new music. Nonetheless, his existing catalog experienced a significant surge in streaming activity following the cultural impact of “Surviving R. Kelly.” Billboard reported that Kelly’s previous works garnered 4.3 million on-demand streams in the U.S., marking a 116% increase compared to the week prior to the documentary’s release.

Tracks such as “Ignition (Remix),” “Bump N’ Grind,” and “Same Girl” witnessed notable increases in Spotify streams. For instance, “Same Girl” saw a 126% rise in streams following the final episode of “Surviving R. Kelly.” Although interest has diminished somewhat in the five years since the docuseries debuted, R. Kelly’s music continues to be cherished by many. He continues to receive substantial revenues from various streaming services and is likely to sustain this income throughout the duration of his incarceration.
