Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage expressed her frustration about being criticized for her fashion choices during a recent appearance on the ‘Receipts’ podcast.
The 44-year-old singer and single mother lamented that she faces backlash for dressing in a way that is deemed inappropriate for her age, unlike other female celebrities in their 40s who are praised for their beauty in similar outfits.
Tiwa Savage highlighted the double standard she experiences compared to icons like Beyoncé, who are celebrated for their sexy style regardless of their age.
She said, “They age-shame me every single day. They say, a woman of you age, how can you be wearing a bikini? I can because I have a body.
“Beyoncé is in her 40s and wears bikinis but Americans don’t age shame her. They would be like, for her age, black don’t crack. It’s more celebrated when you look good in your older age.
“But they [Nigerians], always throw these things like, when her son grows up, he’s going to see this. My son is going to be like, my mum is a powerful and beautiful woman.”
