EPL: Cole Palmer to trademark iconic celebration

EPL: Cole Palmer on the verge of becoming first midfielder to win golden boot

Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer has filed for a trademark for his signature celebration, known as “Cold Palmer,” along with the associated nickname. However, despite this legal protection, other players are still free to imitate the gesture itself.

Palmer, 22, is well-known for his celebration where he rubs his arm to signify a chill after scoring goals for both Chelsea and England.

Intellectual property lawyer Ben Milloy clarified that Palmer is seeking a unique type of trademark by submitting a video of the shiver celebration for registration.

As reported by talkSPORT, Milloy told Hawksbee & Jacobs:

“Instead of filing a name or logo, he has sought to protect a gesture or technical emotion mark.

“It covers typical merchandise, but also includes unusual items like baking powder and underwater vehicles. It’s an indication of what Cole Palmer might have planned.”

While the trademark would safeguard the gesture for commercial purposes like branding and merchandise, players can still replicate the move on the field as a sign of admiration or imitation.

Interestingly, Cole Palmer attributes the inspiration for his celebration to Morgan Rogers, a former Manchester City academy teammate who currently plays for Aston Villa.
