The Presidency on Monday levied allegations against the former Labour Party (LP) presidential aspirant, Peter Obi, asserting that he has gained from the misfortunes experienced by individuals within society.
President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, articulated that Obi’s statements are devoid of decorum and the qualities expected of statesmanship.
Dare issued this statement while admonishing Peter Obi for his remarks concerning the tragic incidents of stampedes that occurred in Oyo, Abuja, and Anambra States, which resulted in numerous fatalities.
Posting on X, Dare wrote: “When seeking someone who benefits from the misfortune of others or from confusion — what the Yoruba people describe as Aríje nínú Màdàrú — look no further than Peter Obi.
“His recent comments on the avoidable tragedies in Anambra and Oyo States lack statesmanship and decency, even as he clings to the fading echoes of his much-vaunted political victory. This attempt to score cheap political points falls flat.
“In times of unfortunate tragedy, leaders are expected to speak responsibly and offer support. President Tinubu cancelled all engagements, expressed profound sadness over the loss of lives, and ordered an immediate investigation. That is the way of true leadership. These incidents have highlighted critical issues that must be addressed.”
On Wednesday, a tragic event unfolded where over 40 children lost their lives during a stampede at a children’s fair held in Ibadan, Oyo State.
In a comparable incident, several fatalities were reported in Okija, Anambra State, during the distribution of rice palliatives.
In response to these incidents, Obi attributed the occurrences of the stampedes to the systemic failures that afflict Nigeria.
