Hundreds of students from the University of Ibadan in Oyo State have organized a peaceful demonstration in response to the prolonged 82-day power outage at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan.

CREEBHILLS reports that UCH serves as the teaching hospital where medical students from the University of Ibadan receive their training.

It was learnt that UCH has been facing a power outage for the past year, attributed to outstanding debts owed to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, IBEDC.

IBEDC severed the power supply to the hospital in March 2024 due to unpaid electricity invoices.

The electricity distribution company similarly disconnected the hospital’s power supply in November 2023 for the same cause.

Reports indicate that the power supply has yet to be restored.

CREEBHILLS reports that students from the University of Ibadan conducted a peaceful protest early Wednesday morning to voice their discontent regarding the situation at the hospital.

The students were led by Bolaji Aweda, the President of the Students’ Union, SU.

Aweda, in an interview emphasized that the students of the institution have been adversely affected.

“We are protesting against what is happening. And, of course, our students are affected.

“For 82 days, there has been no light at UCH, and this is due to the inability of UCH to pay its electricity bill to IBEDC.

“IBEDC has demanded that UCH settle its debt before they will restore power,” he said.
