Norway is on track to become the first country to eliminate the use of Video Assistant Referee, VAR, as 19 out of 32 clubs voted to discontinue the technology in the nation’s top division.
After a thorough four-month consultation involving clubs, players, and supporters’ groups, the decision was made to recommend to the Norwegian Football Federation, NFF, to approve the result.
The final decision is expected to be made by the NFF in March, although there is a possibility that the governing body may choose to overrule the vote.
VAR was introduced in the Eliteserien in 2023, but it has faced criticism from fans throughout the country.
In a notable incident, a game between Rosenborg and Lillestrøm had to be abandoned earlier in the season due to fans throwing fish cakes onto the field to protest against VAR.
Other matches have also been disrupted by croissants, champagne corks, and tennis balls being thrown onto the pitch.
