NLC Suspends Planned Nationwide Protest Over 50% Telecom Tariff Hike

President Tinubu Invites Organized Labour for Crucial Minimum Wage Talks at Aso Villa"

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has decided to suspend its planned nationwide protest against the recent 50% increase in telecom tariffs, following a crucial meeting with government officials on Monday night.

The meeting, held at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), resulted in an agreement to form a broader review committee to examine the entire telecom tariff structure.

Key Outcomes of the Meeting

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, NLC President Joe Ajaero stated that:

✅ The government agreed to establish a larger committee to review the entire tariff model.
✅ The committee will have five representatives from both sides and must submit its findings within two weeks.
✅ The planned submission of protest letters, scheduled for Tuesday, has been put on hold until the committee’s findings are reviewed.
✅ The NLC’s next course of action—including protests, boycotts, or service withdrawals—will depend on the outcome of the committee’s recommendations.

“We emphasized that the NLC is the largest organization in Africa, and no stakeholder consultation can exclude us and still stand. On that basis, they agreed to form a broader committee to ensure a fair and inclusive agreement on the tariff structure,” Ajaero said.

He added that if the committee fails to reach a fair resolution, the NLC may resume protests, boycott telecom services, or take other necessary actions.

What Happens Next?

🔹 The committee will meet over the next two weeks to deliberate on the best way forward.
🔹 The NLC will decide on its next steps based on the outcome of the review.
🔹 If no fair resolution is reached, labour actions could resume, affecting telecom services across Nigeria.
