Issa Rae continues to make power moves in Hollywood, transitioning from YouTube success to dominating the big screen. In a recent interview with Forbes, the multi-talented writer, producer, and entrepreneur opened up about her growing empire, her commitment to authentic Black storytelling, and her latest business venture.
Her production company, HOORAE, has been at the forefront of showcasing Black narratives, with her latest film, One of Them Days, starring SZA and Keke Palmer, serving as another testament to that mission. Speaking on her approach, Issa shared:
“We want to prioritize Black audiences and storytellers. Those stories, in particular, are the reason I’m here. I’m also in a business, so we have to think smart and what will make money and what will draw audiences to our work but we are very much ‘what is missing?’ first.”
Beyond film and television, Issa has built an impressive ecosystem of businesses, including Hoorae Media, Raedio, and Color Creative. Balancing it all, she admits:
“Honestly, it’s a lot of conversations and meetings, and I’m not saying I’m perfect at it.”
Her latest endeavor? A new jewelry collection, Braeve, in collaboration with Cast Jewelry. Known for her love of statement pieces, she sees jewelry as more than just an accessory—it’s a symbol of status and legacy.
“Cast is the most legacy-building collaboration I’ve ever done. Storytelling is forever, make no mistake. But sometimes the stories get detached from the storytellers; the best stories do. This still feels . . . tangibly finite.”
From the entertainment industry to the business world, Issa Rae is proving that her ambitions have no limits—and she’s only getting started.
