Afrobeats artist Ayra Starr reassures her LGBTQ+ fans of her unwavering support despite facing criticism.
In a recent interview with The Standard, the GRAMMY-nominated singer addressed the backlash she received from some Nigerian fans for openly embracing her queer supporters in Brazil.
During her visit, fans affectionately coined the term ‘Sabigays’ in celebration of her ‘Sabi Girl’ persona.
Ayra was all for it calling it:
“The most iconic thing to ever exist from a Nigerian artist.”
Despite Nigeria’s strict anti-LGBTQ+ laws, Ayra is committed to showing love and support, she shared:
“My culture is very different and they have a different mindset. I’ve always been a maverick and I’ve always had a mind of my own to think how I want to think. I support who I want to support; nothing can change that.”
Unapologetic and fearless, Ayra Starr continues to stand for inclusivity, proving that her fan base isn’t just a community, it’s a movement
