House of Reps move to create Office of Prime Minister

Reps pass tax reform bill

A legislative proposal aimed at establishing the Office of the Prime Minister as the head of government alongside the Office of the President as the head of state, while also delineating a framework for the electoral process pertinent to these offices, has successfully undergone its second reading within the House of Representatives.

This Prime Minister legislative proposal was one of 32 constitutional amendment bills that successfully advanced to the second reading in the House of Representatives on Thursday.

Included within these proposals is a bill intended to amend the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, with the objective of allocating specific seats for women within both the National Assembly and state houses of assembly.

Additionally, there exists a bill designed to modify the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, which aims to shorten the time frame for the resolution of pre-election petition matters, establish pre-election tribunals for such matters, and regulate the process for suspending a member of the National Assembly from their legislative responsibilities.

A legislative proposal intended to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, with the purpose of reassessing the criteria for eligibility for election as President, Vice-President, governors, and deputy governors, also successfully passed its second reading.

Moreover, a bill aimed at amending the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to reassess the status of the Federal Capital Territory in relation to the election of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, along with bills proposing the establishment of Wan State and Gobir State, likewise secured passage at the second reading.

To date, approximately 113 constitutional amendment bills have successfully progressed to the second reading stage.
