Funke Akindele, renowned actress and filmmaker, recently shared her vulnerable journey of seeking therapy for the first time following a heartbreaking experience.
During a conversation with Chude Jideonwo, she revealed how being ridiculed for her marital status during her political campaign deeply affected her.
In 2023, Funke Akindele made headlines by running for Deputy Governor of Lagos State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Despite the attention her political ambition garnered, it also subjected her to harsh scrutiny and criticism, ultimately leading her to seek professional help for her emotional well-being.
“There was one video I watched where women were mocking me for not having a husband, and I want to do politics. I broke down and cried. I told myself I needed to speak to a therapist, and I felt better,” she revealed during the interview.
Funke Akindele noted that while she had always believed in the value of therapy, she had long resisted it due to fears of gossip and public scrutiny.
“Right from the scratch, I’ve always known that therapy was important, but never submitted to it because I didn’t want them to carry my gist. I kept acting strong while they were throwing everything at me,” she added.
The actress, whose works have consistently broken box office records in Nigeria, encouraged others going through emotional distress to not suffer in silence.
“I want to advise you out there that it is very important to speak up,” she concluded.
