Chelsea have officially announced the signing of Portuguese midfield sensation Dário Essugo from Sporting CP, securing the 20-year-old on a long-term contract that runs until 2033.
The deal, finalized and unveiled on the club’s website on Monday evening, marks another strategic addition to the Blues’ youth-driven recruitment model under newly appointed head coach Enzo Maresca.
Essugo, a defensive midfielder known for his power, maturity, and tactical discipline, has been touted as one of Portugal’s most exciting young prospects.
Born in Lisbon and of Angolan descent, he made history in March 2021 by debuting for Sporting’s senior team at just 16 years and six days, becoming the youngest player to do so in the club’s history, surpassing legends like Luis Figo.
Following 23 senior appearances for Sporting, Essugo gained further experience with loan spells at Chaves and, most recently, with Las Palmas in La Liga, where he featured 27 times and netted once during the 2024/25 season.
Internationally, he remains a regular with Portugal’s U21 national team, last appearing during the March 2025 international break.
