The Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, has called on Nigerian political scientists and academic institutions to closely examine the political trajectory of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), particularly how he became part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration despite being a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The revered monarch made this statement on Thursday during the 2025 OAU Distinguished Personality Lecture held at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State. Wike himself delivered the keynote address at the event.

While addressing attendees, the Ooni expressed astonishment at Wike’s continued political relevance, especially his role in the current APC-led government under President Tinubu.
“For your career, I will particularly say that I give a very strong honour to the father of the nation, President Bola Tinubu. You belong to a different political party and yet are able to work together,” the monarch stated.
“You are part of this government. It’s still a mystery; I don’t even know how it happened. For me, it is something that universities should be studying—and I mean it; it’s very important.”
The Ooni continued:
“Hate him, like him; what will be, will be. He (Wike) is a politician to be studied. I don’t know how he’s been actively relevant for 20 years.”
He also praised Wike’s contribution to national development, stating:
“Nigeria is for all of us and you are playing your part and making history.”
Wike Pledges Support for Tinubu’s 2027 Reelection Bid
Wike, who has served as Governor of Rivers State and remains a PDP stalwart, has repeatedly declared his loyalty to President Tinubu. He has vowed to lead Tinubu’s reelection campaign in Rivers State in 2027, further fueling discussions about his cross-party alliance and political strategy.
His inclusion in the APC-led Federal Executive Council despite being in the opposition has continued to raise questions and spark debates nationwide.
