Elon Musk has reportedly extended an olive branch to former U.S. President Donald Trump following a private phone conversation between the two on the evening of June 10, marking their first direct contact since a highly publicized feud earlier in the month.
The call, confirmed by Reuters through a White House source, was said to be initiated in part due to behind-the-scenes efforts by Vice President JD Vance and Trump’s Chief of Staff, Susie Wiles, who urged Musk to de-escalate the situation.
Just hours after the call, at 3:04 a.m. on June 11, Musk took to X (formerly Twitter) to issue a public apology:
“I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far.”
While Musk did not specify which comments he regretted, the apology followed a series of now-deleted posts in which he had made inflammatory claims—including an unverified accusation linking Trump to classified documents connected to the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Musk also previously voiced support for Trump’s impeachment over the controversy.
Tensions and Attempts at Reconciliation
Musk and Trump’s falling out began shortly after Trump’s administration held a farewell event for Musk, who had stepped down as head of the Department of Government Efficiency—a position Musk held during the first months of Trump’s second term. The billionaire entrepreneur had led aggressive cost-cutting initiatives and was once considered a key figure in the administration’s reform efforts.
Despite their clash, Musk has shown signs of warming back to Trump in recent days. He has expressed support for Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles following protests in the wake of ICE raids and has moderated earlier harsh criticisms of Trump’s sweeping tax and policy package, which he once called a “disgusting abomination.”
Trump, for his part, also appears to be softening. In a podcast interview released on June 11, he commented:
“I was disappointed in him. But it is what it is. Things like that happen. I don’t blame him for anything.”
Political Implications
The reconciliation efforts may signal a broader strategy by both camps to realign ahead of key political battles, especially as speculation continues about potential roles for influential business leaders like Musk in future governance or advisory positions.
Whether this phone call represents a true mending of relations or merely a political truce remains to be seen.
