“We make things harder” – Toke Makinwa Urges Young People to Maintain Relationship Standards

Media personality Toke Makinwa has urged young people not to compromise their standards when choosing romantic partners, insisting there are plenty of options for everyone.

Speaking on her podcast, Makinwa emphasized the importance of knowing one’s worth and refusing to bow to societal pressures or online criticism when it comes to relationship expectations.

“There are over a billion people in this world. You can find someone who matches what you’re looking for. Stop letting society dictate your choices,” she said.

Makinwa also criticized the widespread trend of shaming individuals—particularly women—for having financial or personal preferences in relationships.

“If you say, ‘Oh, this girl is a money-hungry b!tch, all she wants is a man to pay her bills.’ If you can’t pay her bills, leave. There’s another guy out there who can and will,” she stated.

According to Makinwa, attempts to shame others for their relationship choices often stem from personal insecurity rather than genuine concern.

“We make things harder than they are by arguing online, forcing opinions, and tearing each other down. If someone is not what you’re looking for, stop trying to point out their flaws. It’s a reflection of you, not them,” she explained.

She further stressed that confidence and self-belief should be non-negotiable qualities, adding that everyone has the right to set their own standards without interference.

“If someone wakes up every day believing they are the best thing since sliced bread—good for them. Who are you to tell them otherwise?” Makinwa concluded.
