The Labour Party has officially denied ongoing rumors suggesting that its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is at risk of being expelled from the party.
In a strong rebuttal issued through Ken Eluma Asogwa, the Senior Special Adviser to the Acting National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, the party described the claims as the handiwork of political impostors attempting to sow confusion and division.
No Truth to Expulsion Rumour
The rumor gained traction after Abayomi Arabambi, a former factional spokesperson of the party, made controversial statements during a recent appearance on Channels Television, suggesting that the party was planning to expel Peter Obi.
Reacting to this, Asogwa clarified that Arabambi and his associates have no legal or constitutional ties to the Labour Party, as affirmed by a Supreme Court ruling on April 4, 2025. The ruling confirmed that individuals parading themselves as Labour Party leaders had long been stripped of any authority to speak or act on behalf of the party.
“These individuals are political jesters acting on behalf of hidden forces,” the party’s statement read.
“Their aim is to disrupt the ongoing coalition talks Peter Obi is involved in, talks that are crucial for the future of Nigeria’s political landscape.”
Labour Party Reaffirms Support for Obi
The party emphasized its unwavering support for Peter Obi and his role in high-level coalition negotiations aimed at charting a new political direction for Nigeria.
A statement previously issued on May 25, 2025, already reaffirmed the party’s commitment to Obi’s leadership and national influence, which the current clarification reiterates.
Public Urged to Ignore Fake News
The Labour Party called on Nigerians and the media to disregard any pronouncements made by individuals not officially recognized by the party’s current leadership. The statement further warned against giving a platform to political actors who are no longer relevant to the party’s structure or mission.
“The idea of expelling Peter Obi is both unlawful and ridiculous,” Asogwa stated, urging everyone to rely only on information released through the office of the Acting National Chairman for credible updates.
