Super Falcons star Asisat Oshoala has paid a heartfelt tribute to late Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai, also known as Dodo Mayana, during Nigeria’s opening match at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Oshoala, who scored the opening goal in Nigeria’s 3-0 victory over Tunisia on Sunday, was seen with Rufai’s name boldly inscribed on a band around her wrist—a symbolic gesture that resonated deeply with fans.
Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, the six-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year posted a series of photos from the match with a touching caption:
“Our flag 🇳🇬 does not fly because the wind moves it. It flies with the last breath of our gone heroes. Thank you Dodo Mayana….Rest on Legend !🕊️🕊️”
Rufai’s Legacy Remembered
Peter Rufai, who passed away on July 3 in Lagos after suffering a reported cardiac arrest at age 61, was a key figure in Nigeria’s football history. He was part of the Super Eagles’ golden generation, helping Nigeria win the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and starring at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups.
The former Deportivo La Coruña and Farense goalkeeper’s death marks the sixth loss from the 1994 AFCON-winning squad, following the passing of Rashidi Yekini, Stephen Keshi, Thompson Oliha, Uche Okafor, and Wilfred Agbonavbare.
Fans Applaud Oshoala’s Patriotism
Oshoala’s choice to honour a Nigerian icon sparked widespread praise online. While some global tributes were being paid to late Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who also died recently, Oshoala’s decision to focus on a national legend struck a chord with fans.
“She’s the real Agba baller,” one user wrote. “She didn’t forget her own.”
Oshoala remains a vital part of Nigeria’s quest to retain their WAFCON title, as the Super Falcons eye a record-extending championship run.
