The Lagos State Police Command has announced a 12-hour restriction on the movement of vehicles and boats across the state on Saturday, July 12, 2025, as part of efforts to ensure a peaceful and orderly conduct of the Local Government Elections.
According to the statement released by the Police, the restriction will begin at 3:00 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m., affecting all parts of Lagos, including roadways and waterways.
Only Essential Workers, Observers, and Journalists Exempted
During the restriction period, only individuals on essential duties will be allowed to move. These include:
-
Emergency medical personnel
-
Accredited election observers
-
Electoral officials
-
Journalists with valid identification
The Police emphasized that anyone caught violating this restriction will be arrested and charged in court.
Inter-agency Security Effort
The movement ban is part of a broader plan developed by the Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES). Officers from multiple security agencies will be deployed across the state to enforce the directive and maintain peace at polling units and collation centers.
No Armed Escorts, Sirens, or State-backed Security Forces Allowed
To prevent intimidation and ensure a level playing field, the Police have banned the use of police escorts, armed aides, or sirens by politicians at polling centers.
Additionally, state-backed security outfits are prohibited from participating in election activities.
Warning to Political Thugs and Mischief-makers
The Police issued a stern warning to anyone planning to disrupt the election:
“Anyone found fomenting trouble, inciting violence, or attempting to intimidate voters will be arrested and prosecuted—along with their sponsors.”
Political Parties and Parents Urged to Act Responsibly
All 15 political parties contesting in the elections have been urged to caution their supporters against violence or any form of electoral misconduct.
Parents were also advised to warn their children against participating in any disruptive behavior, while residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest security agency.
