ABUJA, Nigeria – The nation has been plunged into mourning following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, 2025, after a prolonged illness.
The announcement was confirmed in a statement by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. The statement revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over Buhari’s passing and has ordered a series of national mourning protocols.
“President Tinubu has spoken with Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the widow of the late President, to convey his heartfelt condolences,” the statement read.
In a swift move, President Tinubu directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel immediately to the United Kingdom to accompany the former president’s remains back to Nigeria.
As a mark of respect, Tinubu has also ordered that national flags be flown at half-mast across the country.
Buhari, a former Major General, first ruled Nigeria as a military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985. He returned to power decades later as a civilian president in 2015, serving two terms before handing over to President Tinubu in May 2023.
Throughout his presidency, Buhari was known for his anti-corruption stance, efforts to combat terrorism, and his frequent medical visits to the UK, which had been a point of public concern throughout his administration.
His death marks the end of an era in Nigeria’s political landscape, closing a chapter on one of the most consequential figures in the nation’s modern history.
Further details regarding funeral arrangements are expected in the coming days.
