The remains of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at approximately 4:30 p.m. after a prolonged illness, have been flown back to Nigeria.

The late president’s body arrived on Monday, July 14, under heavy security, as part of arrangements for a state burial by Islamic rites.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead the official delegation to the United Kingdom to coordinate the return of the body and oversee the necessary protocols.

Upon arrival, top government officials, senior military officers, and members of the Buhari family were present at the airport to receive the former leader’s remains.

Buhari, who served Nigeria as a military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, is expected to be laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, following Islamic traditions.

National flags continue to fly at half-mast as Nigeria observes a seven-day period of mourning declared by the Presidency.
