Fatima Buhari, the first daughter of late former President Muhammadu Buhari, was seen in tears on Tuesday as her father’s body arrived Daura, Katsina State, for burial. Fatima, visibly emotional, was comforted by family members and friends at the Buhari family residence in Daura.
The former president, who died at the age of 82 on Sunday after a prolonged illness in a London hospital, was flown back to Nigeria aboard a Nigerian Air Force aircraft.
His family received his body and a federal delegation led by Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, who President Bola Tinubu dispatched to escort the remains home.
The burial ceremony, scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Emir’s Palace, is being conducted according to Islamic rites and coordinated by a 25-member Presidential Burial Committee chaired by Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and other dignitaries also traveled to Daura for the solemn occasion.
Buhari, who previously served as Nigeria’s military ruler (1983–1985) and as a two-term civilian president (2015–2023), is being laid to rest amid seven days of national mourning, with flags flying at half-mast across the country and at Nigerian embassies abroad.
Condolence registers have been opened at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, federal ministries, and embassies for Nigerians and officials to pay their respects.
