“I Want My Legacy to Be That I Loved Fiercely” – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Renowned Nigerian author and feminist icon, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has shared her thoughts on legacy and how she would like to be remembered.

Speaking in a recent interview with DW News, the award-winning novelist expressed that she’s not particularly interested in legacy, arguing that the concept is often more of a preoccupation for men.

“I think it’s actually men who spend their time thinking about legacy. I don’t. I’m thinking about the next book I want to write,” she said.

When pressed further, Adichie stated that if she were to define a legacy, it would be simple:

“I want my legacy to be a person who loved fiercely. That’s all I want my legacy to be.”

She added that people shouldn’t be overly concerned with how they’ll be remembered after death, since they won’t be around to witness it.

“When we die, we don’t know what happened, so why should I care what my legacy is? I don’t know where I would be. I might not know…”

More personally, she said:

“I want to be remembered as a person who loved the people she loved and the places she loved very fiercely.”

Adichie’s reflection offers a deeply human and emotionally grounded view of legacy—one not built on fame or accolades, but on love and connection.
