Prof. Lar Patricia Manko, Acting Vice Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University (formerly University of Abuja), has refuted allegations by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike that the university is illegally occupying 11,000 hectares of land in the Federal Capital Territory.

In a statement made during an interview with newsmen in Abuja, Prof. Manko clarified that the land in question is a legacy asset officially allocated to the institution by the Federal Government, and not land that was “grabbed” as claimed.

“We recognize that the Honorable Minister is the landlord of the FCT, but this land was legitimately granted to the university. It is not too much for a growing federal institution,” she stated.

The controversy arose after Wike, at the commissioning of the Giri access road on June 30, accused the university of unauthorized occupation and fencing of the land without documentation. He alleged intentions to resell government property and directed officials to reclaim 4,000 hectares from the university’s allocation.

In response, Prof. Manko emphasized that the land has been earmarked for critical institutional developments, including agriculture, tourism, research centres, student hostels, and permanent staff quarters.

She explained that, due to limited funding, the university has entered into public-private partnerships and signed several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with investors to facilitate development.

“The current staff quarters are built on temporary land provided by the military. The permanent site development is part of our long-term strategic plan,” she said, adding that the university is open to dialogue and resolution.

She concluded by noting that several local and international partners are working with the university to transform the 11,000 hectares into a hub for education, research, and innovation.
