Muhammed Babangida, the son of former Nigerian military president General Ibrahim Babangida, has denied widespread rumours suggesting he rejected his recent appointment by President Bola Tinubu as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture (BOA).
In a statement released on Monday, Babangida’s camp described the reports as false and misleading, clarifying that he has gratefully accepted the appointment and is ready to serve.
“We wish to clarify that Muhammed gratefully accepts the appointment as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture, as announced by the federal government,” the statement read. “He extends his sincere appreciation to President Tinubu for the trust and confidence bestowed upon him.”
The rebuttal comes days after the presidency announced Babangida’s appointment among a list of new leadership roles across various federal agencies.
Other prominent appointments announced last Friday include:
-
Lydia Kalat Musa – Chairperson, Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority
-
Jamilu Wada Aliyu – Chairman, National Educational Research and Development Council
-
Sanusi Musa – Chairman, Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution
Babangida’s media team described the rumour as a calculated attempt to sow discord and tarnish both his reputation and that of the Tinubu administration. They further warned that those responsible for spreading the fake news would be identified and prosecuted.
“We also want to assure the public that those spreading these falsehoods will be thoroughly investigated and brought to justice,” the statement added.
The Bank of Agriculture plays a vital role in Nigeria’s agricultural sector by providing credit facilities and financial services to farmers and agribusinesses. Babangida’s appointment is expected to strengthen the institution’s leadership and policy direction.
