The Lagos State University (LASU) has suspended all academic and socio-academic activities, including the second-semester 2024/2025 examinations, until further notice.
According to reports by Vanguard, the shutdown was triggered by the ongoing industrial strike launched by the university’s staff unions under the Joint Action Committee (JAC). This includes the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-LASU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU-LASU), SSANU-LASU, and NAAT-LASU.
What Led to the Shutdown?
In a statement issued by Mrs. Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, Deputy Registrar and Public Relations Coordinator, the university’s Senate made the decision during a virtual meeting held on Saturday, August 2, 2025.
The meeting was convened following the intensification of the strike, which is said to be directed at the Lagos State Government, not the university’s management.
“The University Management has, over the past few weeks, facilitated dialogue and pursued peaceful resolutions between the unions and the State Government,” the statement read.
A high-level peace meeting chaired by the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, was held on Friday, August 1, with all stakeholders present — but no resolution was reached.
