Spain’s women’s national team has named former player Sonia Bermúdez as head coach, replacing Montse Tome.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced the decision on Monday, confirming that Bermúdez will work alongside fellow ex-player Iraia Iturregi, who brings extensive coaching experience with 402 First Division matches.

The appointment comes shortly after Spain’s narrow loss to England in a penalty shootout during the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 final on July 27.

Tome, who made history as the first woman to coach Spain’s senior women’s team, had led the squad to victory in the inaugural Women’s Nations League in 2024.

Tome took over from Jorge Vilda in 2023 following Spain’s FIFA Women’s World Cup triumph, stepping up from her role as his assistant amid the fallout from former federation president Luis Rubiales’ controversial conduct at the World Cup awards ceremony. Her contract was set to run until the end of August.
