Cristiano Ronaldo’s hunt for silverware with Al-Nassr will have to wait a little longer, as the Riyadh giants fell short against Al-Ahli in the Saudi Super Cup final on Saturday.

The clash ended 2-2 after regulation time and was decided via penalties, with Édouard Mendy’s heroics between the sticks sealing Al-Ahli’s first Super Cup title since 2016.

Ronaldo put Al-Nassr in front from the spot, registering his 100th goal for the club in the process. Franck Kessie drew Al-Ahli level before halftime, but Marcelo Brozovic’s late strike looked set to hand Al-Nassr the trophy.

However, Roger Ibañez struck again for Al-Ahli to force a shootout. In the ensuing penalty drama, Mendy pulled off a crucial save from Abdullah Al-Khaibari, and Wenderson Galeno converted the decisive kick to secure a famous victory.

The defeat means Ronaldo is still chasing his first major title with Al-Nassr, while Al-Ahli celebrated a long-awaited return to the top of Saudi football.
