Music legend Gloria Gaynor, best known for her timeless anthem ‘I Will Survive’, has been announced as one of the 2025 Kennedy Center Honorees. However, the honor has quickly become the subject of controversy.
The recognition, presented by Donald Trump, has sparked criticism from some of Gaynor’s LGBTQ+ fans, who have long celebrated her hit song as a symbol of empowerment and resilience.
In a statement reacting to the honor, the 81-year-old singer said:
“My hope is that in accepting this honor, I can continue with the inspirational phenomenon that began with ‘I Will Survive.’ Sharing my music and art on a global level to provide encouragement, hope, empowerment, inspiration, understanding, and unity is the core of my purpose.”
Despite her uplifting words, newly surfaced documents revealed that Gaynor has donated more than $22,000 to Republican groups and candidates since 2023. Her largest contribution went to Speaker of the House Mike Johnson ($2,160.57), with additional donations to Rep. Kevin McCarthy.
Critics argue that her financial support, coupled with Trump’s pledge to strip “wokeness” from the Kennedy Center, puts her at odds with the very communities that helped cement her as an icon. Some are even calling for her to decline the honor altogether.
