The Federal Government has clarified that it has never signed any binding agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), contrary to the union’s long-standing claims.
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, made this disclosure on Thursday while addressing newsmen in Abuja. He explained that the documents often cited by ASUU, particularly those from 2009 and 2011, were merely proposals discussed during negotiations but were never formally signed.
“The documents ASUU has been referring to as agreements were just proposals that were never signed,” Alausa stated.
The minister emphasized that while President Bola Tinubu’s administration remains committed to resolving the union’s grievances, it is essential to clarify the nature of the documents.
He also dismissed reports suggesting that a meeting had been scheduled with ASUU and the Minister of Labour and Employment, describing such reports as inaccurate.
Despite the clarification, stakeholders are watching closely to see how the Federal Government will address ASUU’s demands, which have historically led to prolonged industrial actions disrupting academic calendars across Nigerian universities.
