Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen have named Kasper Hjulmand as their new head coach following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag, who lasted just two games in charge.
The former Denmark national team boss has signed a deal with the German club running until the summer of 2027.
Kasper Hjulmand, 53, famously guided Denmark to the semi-finals of Euro 2020, where they were narrowly beaten by England after extra time.
Speaking after his unveiling, Hjulmand said:
“It is an honour to be entrusted with such a team. I am now very motivated to help shape the future of Bayer Leverkusen with both established and exciting new players.”
His appointment brings an end to a turbulent few weeks for the club. Ten Hag, who succeeded Xabi Alonso on 1 September, was dismissed after collecting just one point from two Bundesliga matches.
Alonso had earlier left for Real Madrid after leading Leverkusen to an unbeaten domestic Double in 2023-24, securing the club’s first-ever Bundesliga crown.
Sporting director Simon Rolfes admitted bringing in Ten Hag was a mistake but said keeping him would have been “an even bigger mistake.”
Runners-up last season, Leverkusen are currently 12th in the table and Hjulmand is expected to take charge of Friday’s home clash against Eintracht Frankfurt.
